Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology for Handicapped, UP, Kanpur, established in 1997, is an autonomous institution established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh under the legislation “ The persons with disabilities ( Equal opportunities, protection of right and full participation ) Act 1995”.The Institute aims to provide meaningful education, of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological innovation. Prof. Rachna Asthana is the director of Dr. Ambedkar Institute Of Technology For Handicapped, KANPUR.

The institute covers the area of 15 acres, (14,000 sq.mt.). Well furnished buildings have been constructed so far. The campus is specially designed for handicapped peoples. It has a barrier-free infrastructure where persons confined in a wheelchair may also approach different classrooms, labs, libraries, etc. There is a substation of 11KV/400V capacity within the campus for electrical power supply. Diesel generator of different capacities is also installed for an uninterrupted power supply. The institute is also having its water supply facility.
The 15 Acres of the land area is located on the west campus, HBTI awadhpuri Kanpur. It is allocated Specifically for institutional purposes. The campus of the Institute is well connected to the main road. The institute is approx at a distance of 500mt. and well connected from the National Highway Grand Trunk Road. Several Govt. as well as Private organizations Rama Dental Medical College, Jawaharlal Nehru Govt. Homoeopathic Medical College, V.S.N.L., U.P.S.I.D.C., Board of Apprenticeship & Trg., Trade Tax building, etc. are in the close vicinity of the institute.
In the institute, there are separate interconnected blocks for each department along with the Administrative block. Comfortable movement of students including handicapped ones, from one place to another is assured with other necessary public services, meeting the norms and standards for physically disabled persons. The Administrative block comprises of Director’s office, Academic areas Examinations cell, Computer lab, Conference/Committee room with Teaching faculty and other staff cabins.

Student Activities…
Extra-Curricular Activities play a very important role in overall personality development. The academic education is not complete in its own, without extracurricular activities, providing multidimensional personality. The Institute offers a wide range of such activities.
The Institute has four cells for different activities
- Cultural Cell: Every year a set of cultural activities which takes place in college. It is 3-4 days ongoing event which is on the campus itself. The purpose of this event is for the entertainment of the students and faculty too.
- Sports Cell: A series of sports events take place on the campus in which students of the same college and different colleges also participate. Competition for all the indoor as well as outdoor games is there.
- Literary Cell: Different literary contests takes place according to the interest of the students in which students of different colleges participate.
- Special Interest Cell: A series of events are also there in the college for students from different branches related to technology, namely tech fest.
Accommodation for Students…
The campus provides two different types of hostel accommodations for B.Tech. as well as Diploma students:-
Hostel For Diploma Wing
There are separate hostels for boys and girls(Handicapped Students) within the campus. There is proper arrangement of ramps etc so that the student can access each corner of the hostel using a wheelchair.
Total accommodation of the hostel is 300 aprox The rooms are furnished with one chair, one table, a bed and one almirah per student.
There are proper arrangements for the security of hostler boys & girls.
There is a separate common room in each wing for library, television and other modes of entertainment.
Hostel For Degree Wing
At Present, the institute arranges hostel accommodation for Ist year students only outside the campus.
Mess
There is a sufficient large mess attached to the hostel where students can have their meals altogether. The mess provides quality food.
Canteen
There is a canteen attached to the hostel to meet the daily needs of the hostelers as well as day scholars and members of the staff.

The campus provides an easily accessible infrastructure for the handicappers which enables them to move across freely even in the wheelchair.
